Origins of Serie C

1935

Serie C is the third tier of the Italian football league system, below Serie A and Serie B. It took shape in the mid-1930s when the Italian league structure was reorganized, and since then it has been the level where many historic clubs have played between the top divisions and the amateur ranks. It has been divided into regional groups, usually three, and for a time it was known as Lega Pro. Teams compete for promotion to Serie B through league and playoff competition, and clubs that fail may be relegated or even go bankrupt. It is important as a pathway for young players and for smaller clubs in towns across Italy.
