Establishment of Zion National Park

19 November 1919

Zion National Park is a national park in southwestern Utah, in the United States, known for its deep red and cream sandstone canyons, high mesas and cliffs. The Virgin River has carved Zion Canyon over millions of years, and some of its walls rise more than 600 metres. The area was first protected in 1909 as Mukuntuweap National Monument, and it received its present status and name a decade later. It is popular for hikes such as Angels Landing and The Narrows, and it is home to a variety of plants and wildlife, including desert bighorn sheep. It has become one of the most visited national parks in the United States.
