Establishment of Olympic National Park

29 June 1938

Olympic National Park occupies the centre of the Olympic Peninsula in the state of Washington and protects a remarkable variety of ecosystems, from glacier-capped mountains to temperate rainforest and a wild stretch of Pacific coastline. The Hoh Rainforest is among the best-known examples of temperate rainforest in the United States, with moss-draped trees and abundant rain. The park is also a refuge for the Roosevelt elk, named for President Theodore Roosevelt, who had earlier protected part of the area as a national monument. It was designated a national park in 1938 and was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a biosphere reserve in the early 1980s.
