Establishment of Comoé National Park

1 January 1968

Comoe National Park is a large protected area in the north-east of Cote d'Ivoire, along the Comoe River near the border with Burkina Faso and Ghana. It is one of the largest national parks in West Africa and contains a mosaic of savanna, open woodland and gallery forest that follows the river. The park shelters elephants, hippopotamuses, many antelope species and a variety of primates and birds. It was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983. During the civil conflict of the early 2000s it suffered from poaching and lack of management and was placed on the list of World Heritage in Danger, from which it was removed after conservation efforts in 2017.
