Construction of São Paulo Museum of Art

1968

The Sao Paulo Museum of Art, known as MASP, is one of the most important art museums in Latin America, with a collection of European paintings, along with art from Brazil and other regions. It was founded by the journalist and businessman Assis Chateaubriand and the Italian-born critic Pietro Maria Bardi, who assembled works from European dealers and collectors. The museum's present building, on Avenida Paulista, was designed by the architect Lina Bo Bardi and is known for its large concrete-and-glass body, raised above the ground on two red beams. Inside, paintings were famously displayed on glass easels, with no walls, so that visitors could walk among them. It was inaugurated by Queen Elizabeth II during a visit to Brazil.
