Mikheil Saakashvili was born on 21 December 1967 in Tbilisi. A Georgian statesman who became one of the most prominent faces of post-Soviet politics, Saakashvili was a lawyer trained in the United States who rose to lead the 2003 Rose Revolution, which ousted Eduard Shevardnadze. As president he pursued pro-Western reforms, fought petty corruption, rebuilt the police and sought membership of NATO and the European Union. His term saw the 2008 war with Russia over South Ossetia and Abkhazia, and later accusations of authoritarian practices. After leaving office he took Ukrainian citizenship and served as governor of Odesa Oblast, and he later faced criminal convictions in Georgia that he denounced as political.
