South Yemen

from 30 November 1967 to 22 May 1990

South Yemen declared independence after the British withdrew from Aden, at first as the People's Republic of South Yemen, and in 1970 it became the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen, the only Marxist state in the Arab world, allied with the Soviet Union. Its capital was Aden. The country was torn by factional conflicts within its ruling party, culminating in a bloody civil conflict in January 1986, and had border wars with North Yemen in 1972 and 1979. With the end of the Cold War the two Yemens agreed to unify, and the Republic of Yemen was proclaimed in 1990. A southern attempt at secession led to a civil war in 1994 that the north won, but southern separatism has remained a political force.
