Creation of Ada

1980

Ada is a programming language developed for the United States Department of Defense, which had been using hundreds of different languages in its projects. A team led by the French computer scientist Jean Ichbiah won an international competition to design the new language, and it was named after Ada Lovelace, who is often described as the first programmer. Its early standard, published in 1980, was followed by an ISO standard in the 1980s. Ada emphasises readability, strong typing and reliability, with built-in support for concurrency. It is used in safety-critical systems such as avionics, air traffic control, railways and space software.
