1980

The Name of the Rose is a historical mystery novel by the Italian scholar and semiotician Umberto Eco. Set in an Italian Benedictine abbey in the fourteenth century, it follows the Franciscan friar William of Baskerville and his young assistant Adso as they investigate a series of deaths linked to a forbidden book in the abbey's labyrinthine library. The novel blends detective fiction with medieval theology, church politics and debates about knowledge and laughter, and it contains many references to Sherlock Holmes. It became an international bestseller and was translated into dozens of languages. A 1986 film adaptation starred Sean Connery, and the book established Eco as a popular novelist as well as an academic.
