Discovery of Paaliaq

7 August 2000

Paaliaq is an irregular moon of Saturn, about twenty kilometers across, discovered in 2000 by a team led by Brett Gladman. It orbits the planet in the same direction as Saturn's rotation at a great distance, well over ten million kilometers, and belongs to the Inuit group of outer moons, which share similar orbits and may be fragments of a larger body. The moon was named after Paaliaq, a shaman in Inuit mythology. Irregular moons like it are thought to have been captured by Saturn early in the history of the Solar System.
