Discovery of Skathi

23 September 2000

Skathi is an irregular moon of Saturn, roughly eight kilometers across, discovered in 2000 by a team led by Brett Gladman. It orbits Saturn at a great distance in the opposite direction to the planet's rotation, which is typical of captured moons, and belongs to a group of retrograde moons named for figures of Norse mythology. Skathi gives its name to a family of moons with similar orbits that may have been formed by a collision. It is named after Skaði, a giantess in Norse mythology.
