Launch of MusicBrainz

17 July 2000

MusicBrainz is an open online database of music metadata, containing information on artists, albums, recordings, labels and the relations between them. It was started by Robert Kaye after the company that ran the CD database CDDB changed its terms and began to charge for access to what volunteers had contributed. MusicBrainz was designed as a community-maintained alternative, with data placed in the public domain or under open licences and a unique identifier for each entity. The project is run by the MetaBrainz Foundation, and its data is used by media players, tagging programs, and services such as ListenBrainz, which collects listening histories. It has become an important open source of music information.
