Discovery of Kepler-452b

23 July 2015

Kepler-452b is an exoplanet about 1,400 light-years from Earth in the constellation Cygnus, found by NASA's Kepler space telescope with the transit method, which detects the slight dimming of a star when a planet passes in front. NASA announced it in July 2015. It orbits a star similar to the Sun in about 385 days, close to the length of an Earth year, and so lies within the habitable zone of its star. The planet is about 60 percent larger than Earth in diameter, which means it could be rocky or could be more like a small gas planet, and its composition is unknown. The press called it Earth's cousin, but its great distance puts it out of reach of study.
