Rise of Trumpism

16 June 2015

Trumpism refers to the political ideas, style and movement associated with Donald Trump, a real estate developer and television personality who announced his candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination in 2015. It is characterized by right-wing populism and nationalism, summed up in the slogans America First and Make America Great Again, with a focus on restricting immigration, skepticism toward free trade agreements and international alliances, and hostility to the media and the political establishment. Trump won the 2016 election, lost in 2020 and won again in 2024. Supporters see the movement as a response to elites who ignored working-class voters, while critics say it is divisive and challenges democratic norms, a charge that centered on the events of 6 January 2021.
