Discovery of Hyrrokkin

12 December 2004

Hyrrokkin is an irregular moon of Saturn, only a few kilometers across, found in late 2004 by astronomers led by Scott Sheppard and David Jewitt. It orbits Saturn at a great distance in the opposite direction to the planet's rotation, a typical sign of a captured moon, and is part of the Norse group of Saturn's outer moons. The name is that of a giantess in Norse mythology, who in the story of Baldr's funeral launched his ship with a single push. Like other small moons of this kind, it can be observed only with powerful telescopes.
