Discovery of S/2004 S 13

12 December 2004

S/2004 S 13 is a small moon of Saturn, known by a provisional designation that shows it was first spotted in 2004. Like many other faint outer satellites of the planet, it is only a few kilometres across and travels on a distant, inclined and elongated orbit. It was found by a team of astronomers led by Scott Sheppard who used large ground-based telescopes to search for irregular moons. Objects of this type are thought to be captured bodies or fragments of larger ones broken up by collisions. The moon had not been given a formal name when this entry was compiled.
