Suharto died on 27 January 2008 in Jakarta, aged 86. An Indonesian general and politician, Suharto rose in the army and took control in the turmoil that followed the failed coup attempt of 30 September 1965. His forces led the suppression of the Indonesian Communist Party, in which hundreds of thousands of people were killed. He gradually removed Sukarno from power, became acting president in 1967 and president in 1968. His New Order regime brought stability and rapid economic growth, but also authoritarian rule, the invasion of East Timor in 1975, and widespread corruption benefiting his family and associates. The Asian financial crisis of 1997 and subsequent riots forced him to resign in May 1998, and he died in 2008 without having been convicted.
