2008 Kosovo declaration of independence

17 February 2008

Kosovo's declaration of independence was made by the Assembly of Kosovo, led by Prime Minister Hashim Thaçi, who proclaimed the territory an independent and sovereign state. Kosovo, with an ethnic Albanian majority, had been administered by the United Nations since the war of 1998 and 1999, and talks on its future status, based on a plan by the mediator Martti Ahtisaari, had failed to produce an agreement. The declaration was recognized by the United States and most Western European countries, but was rejected by Serbia, which regards Kosovo as part of its territory, and by Russia and several other states. In 2010 the International Court of Justice stated that the declaration had not violated international law.
