STS-122 was a Space Shuttle mission by Atlantis to the International Space Station, which delivered the Columbus laboratory, the main contribution to the station by the European Space Agency. The mission was delayed by problems with fuel-tank sensors in December 2007. The crew was commanded by Stephen Frick and included the European astronauts Hans Schlegel of Germany and Léopold Eyharts of France, who stayed on the station as a member of its long-term crew. During spacewalks the astronauts installed Columbus and carried out other work. The laboratory enabled European experiments in biology, physics and materials science in orbit.
