Creation of Windows Server 2008

27 February 2008

Windows Server 2008 was a Microsoft server operating system built on the same core as Windows Vista and was the successor to Windows Server 2003. It brought Hyper-V, a built-in hypervisor for running virtual machines, along with Server Core, a minimal installation option without a full graphical shell, and a revised version of Internet Information Services. A rebuilt networking stack shared with Vista and the new Server Manager console were also part of the release. It was followed by Windows Server 2008 R2, which was based on the Windows 7 codebase and became one of the most widely deployed server versions in business use.
