Death of Elizabeth Taylor

23 March 2011

Elizabeth Taylor died on 23 March 2011 in Los Angeles, aged 79. A British-American actress, Taylor was born in London to American parents and became a child star in National Velvet at age twelve. As an adult she starred in A Place in the Sun, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Butterfield 8 and the lavish epic Cleopatra, and she won Academy Awards for Butterfield 8 and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Her stormy marriages, including two to the actor Richard Burton, made her one of the most closely followed celebrities of her time. She was one of the first major stars to campaign against AIDS, co-founding the American Foundation for AIDS Research in 1985. She was made a Dame in 2000.
