2011 military intervention in Libya

from 19 March 2011 to 31 October 2011

The 2011 military intervention in Libya was an international operation carried out when a popular uprising against Muammar Gaddafi, part of the Arab Spring, turned into a civil war. After Gaddafi's forces threatened the rebel stronghold of Benghazi, the United Nations Security Council adopted a resolution authorizing all necessary measures to protect civilians and a no-fly zone. A coalition led first by the United States, France and Britain, and then by NATO, carried out air strikes against Libyan government forces. Rebel forces took Tripoli in August, and Gaddafi was captured and killed in his hometown of Sirte in October. The country then fell into prolonged instability, with rival governments and militias, and the intervention remains controversial.
