Creation of elementary OS

31 March 2011

Elementary OS is a Linux distribution based on Ubuntu, built around its own desktop environment, Pantheon, which has a simple design with a dock, a top panel and a focus on consistency. It was created by Daniel Fore and Cassidy James Blaede, and its first release was called Jupiter, with each later one named after a figure from mythology. The system is often described as a lightweight alternative to macOS because of its appearance and ease of use. It has its own AppCenter for installing software, in which developers can sell applications, and the project uses a pay-what-you-want model for downloads. elementary OS aims to respect privacy and avoids collecting user data.
