Death of Amy Winehouse

23 July 2011

Amy Winehouse died on 23 July 2011 in London Borough of Camden, aged 27. An English singer-songwriter from north London, Winehouse blended jazz, soul and pop with a distinctive contralto voice and candid, confessional lyrics. Her debut album Frank in 2003 was well received, but she achieved worldwide success with Back to Black in 2006, produced by Mark Ronson, which included the hit Rehab and won her five Grammy Awards in 2008. Her public struggles with alcohol and drugs drew heavy media attention. She died of alcohol poisoning at her home in Camden in 2011, at the age of 27. Back to Black remains one of the best-selling British albums of the century, and her family established a foundation in her name.
