Discovery of HD 85512 b

17 August 2011

HD 85512 b is a super-Earth orbiting the orange dwarf star HD 85512, about 36 light-years away in the southern constellation Vela. It was found by astronomers at the European Southern Observatory using the HARPS spectrograph, which measures tiny shifts in a star's motion. Its minimum mass is several times that of Earth, and it orbits in about 58 days. When it was announced, it was described as one of the smallest planets with a possible habitable zone orbit, although later studies, using updated models of planetary atmospheres, indicated that it lies closer to the inner edge of the zone and probably is too hot for liquid water, unless it has thick cloud cover.
