Launch of STS-135

8 July 2011

STS-135 was the last mission of the American Space Shuttle programme, flown by the orbiter Atlantis. Its four-person crew, commander Chris Ferguson, pilot Doug Hurley and mission specialists Sandra Magnus and Rex Walheim, delivered supplies and equipment to the International Space Station in a logistics module, to keep the station supplied after the shuttles retired. The flight was extended from the original plan, and Atlantis landed at Kennedy Space Center on 21 July 2011. The shuttle programme had begun with Columbia's first flight in 1981 and had flown more than a hundred missions with five orbiters, including the Hubble servicing flights and the assembly of the space station. After this, American astronauts relied on Russian Soyuz craft until commercial vehicles entered service.
