Release of Siri

9 August 2011

Siri is a virtual assistant that is part of the Apple operating systems, allowing users to ask questions and carry out tasks by voice, such as setting alarms, sending messages or finding information. It began as an independent company, a spin-off from research at SRI International funded by the US defence research agency DARPA, which launched a Siri app for the iPhone. Apple bought the company in 2010 and built the assistant into the iPhone 4S in 2011. Siri was among the first voice assistants widely used by consumers, and it was followed by rivals such as Google Assistant and Amazon's Alexa. Its voice and abilities have been updated many times, though it has been criticised for lagging behind more advanced AI chatbots.
