Creation of Kotlin

22 July 2011

Kotlin is a programming language created by JetBrains, the company behind the IntelliJ development tools, and publicly announced in July 2011. It was designed to run on the Java Virtual Machine and to work smoothly with Java code, while being more concise and safer, for example by treating null values more carefully. The language is named after Kotlin Island near Saint Petersburg, where many of the developers lived. Its first stable version appeared in 2016, and in 2017 Google announced official support for it on Android, which led to wide adoption. Kotlin can also compile to JavaScript and to native code.
