2011 Norway attacks

22 July 2011

On 22 July 2011 Norway suffered two linked terrorist attacks carried out by Anders Behring Breivik, a far-right extremist. In the afternoon he detonated a car bomb outside government buildings in central Oslo, including the office of the prime minister, killing eight people. He then travelled to the island of Utoya, where the youth wing of the Labour Party was holding its annual summer camp, and shot participants for over an hour until he was arrested by police. Sixty-nine people were killed on the island, most of them teenagers. In 2012 Breivik was convicted and sentenced to the maximum form of detention in Norwegian law. The attacks were the deadliest in Norway since the Second World War, and the response of the country's leaders emphasised democracy and openness.
