Jimmy Wales was born on 7 August 1966 in Huntsville. An American internet entrepreneur, Wales studied finance and worked as a futures and options trader before starting an internet company, Bomis, in the 1990s. In 2001, together with Larry Sanger, he launched Wikipedia, a free online encyclopaedia that anyone could edit, as a freer complement to the expert-written Nupedia. He created the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation in 2003 to operate it, and he is known for his support of free knowledge and for his role as a spokesman for the project. The encyclopaedia grew to become one of the most visited websites in the world.
