Founding of International Society for Krishna Consciousness

13 July 1966

The International Society for Krishna Consciousness, known as ISKCON or the Hare Krishna movement, was founded in New York by A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. It belongs to the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition of Hinduism, which follows the teachings of the 16th-century Bengali saint Chaitanya and worships Krishna as the supreme deity. The movement is known for chanting the Hare Krishna mantra in public, devotional temples and the free distribution of vegetarian food. It spread among young people in the West during the counterculture of the late 1960s and 1970s and later gained many members in India and Eastern Europe. After Prabhupada's death in 1977 it faced internal disputes and some criticism, but it remains active worldwide.
