Construction of Tokyo Skytree

22 May 2012

Tokyo Skytree is a broadcasting and observation tower in Sumida, in the east of Tokyo. At 634 metres it is the tallest tower in Japan and one of the tallest structures in the world; the number 634 can be read in Japanese as Musashi, the old name of the region. It was built to replace Tokyo Tower for digital television broadcasting, since tall buildings in the city had begun to block the older tower's signal. The tower was designed with earthquake resistance in mind, using a central shaft that helps absorb vibration, and it has observation decks with views across the city. It stands at the centre of a shopping and entertainment complex.
