Launch of International Standard Name Identifier

15 March 2012

The International Standard Name Identifier, or ISNI, is a system that gives a unique sixteen-digit number to people and organisations that create or contribute to creative works, such as authors, musicians, performers and publishers. Its purpose is to solve the problem of identifying the same person under different names or of telling apart people with the same name. It is an international standard, ISO 27729, and is operated by an agency set up by several organisations including libraries, publishers and rights societies. An ISNI can be used to link the data in library catalogues, databases and web services, and it is related to identifiers such as VIAF and ORCID.
