Creation of ChromeOS

15 June 2012

ChromeOS is a lightweight operating system developed by Google, based on Linux and designed around the Chrome web browser, with most applications running over the internet. Google announced the project in 2009, and the first Chromebook laptops, made by Samsung and Acer, were released in the summer of 2011, with versions for other devices following. The system was meant to be simple, fast to start and easy to secure, and it updates itself automatically. Chromebooks became especially popular in schools in the United States, because they were cheap and easy to manage. Later versions added support for Android apps and Linux programs, extending the range of software that can run on them.
