Introduction of Coinbase

20 June 2012

Coinbase is an American company that operates a cryptocurrency exchange, where people can buy, sell and store digital currencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum. It was founded in San Francisco in June 2012 by Brian Armstrong, a former engineer at Airbnb, and Fred Ehrsam, who had worked at Goldman Sachs, and it began as a simple service for buying Bitcoin. It grew with the rise of cryptocurrencies, and in April 2021 it went public through a direct listing on Nasdaq, which was a milestone for the industry. The company has been subject to regulatory scrutiny in the United States, and its fortunes have followed the swings in cryptocurrency prices.
