Construction of London Stadium

6 May 2012

London Stadium stands in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, east London, and was built as the main arena for the 2012 Summer Olympics and Paralympics, where it hosted the opening and closing ceremonies and the athletics events. It was designed by Populous and has a distinctive roof supported by a ring of steel and a cable system. After the Games it was converted for multiple uses, and since 2016 it has been the home ground of the football club West Ham United. The stadium has also hosted the World Athletics Championships in 2017 and baseball and American football games. The decision to hand it to a football club led to public debate about the cost of the conversion and the legacy of the Olympic investment.
