Release of Roblox

27 August 2006

Roblox is an online platform on which users can play games created by other users, as well as make their own, using a programming language called Lua. It was founded by David Baszucki and Erik Cassel, who had earlier worked on an educational physics simulation called Interactive Physics, and a first version was tested in the early 2000s before the platform launched in 2006. Games on the platform, which range from obstacle courses to role-playing and simulation games, are called experiences, and users play as blocky avatars and can buy a virtual currency called Robux. The service is especially popular with children and young teenagers, and the company has been criticised over child safety and moderation on the platform. It became a publicly listed company in 2021.
