Construction of Starbucks

30 March 1971

Starbucks opened its first store at Pike Place Market in Seattle, founded by three friends, Jerry Baldwin, Zev Siegl and Gordon Bowker, who sold whole-bean coffee and equipment, and took the name from a character in Herman Melville's Moby-Dick. Howard Schultz joined in the early 1980s and, inspired by espresso bars in Milan, pressed for selling coffee drinks. He bought the company in 1987 and expanded it quickly across the United States, then overseas. Starbucks turned the coffeehouse into a global chain, with tens of thousands of stores, and shaped how many people buy and drink coffee, though it has also faced criticism over its business practices.
