Nasdaq began trading as the first electronic stock market in the world. Its name stands for National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations, and at first it was only a computerised system that displayed price quotes for over-the-counter stocks, without a trading floor, though it later became a full exchange. The system was set up by the National Association of Securities Dealers to make prices more transparent. It grew quickly with the technology boom and became the home of many technology firms, including Apple, Microsoft, Amazon and Google. The Nasdaq Composite index, which tracks its listed companies, soared during the dot-com bubble of the late 1990s and fell sharply in 2000.
