Establishment of Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park

26 March 1971

Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park lies on the west coast of the island of Palawan in the Philippines. It protects a limestone karst landscape and a cave system through which an underground river runs for several kilometres before flowing directly into the South China Sea, with part of its length navigable by small boat. The cave contains large chambers with impressive stalactites and stalagmites, and the surrounding area has forest that is home to monkeys, monitor lizards and many birds and bats. The park was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999, and in 2012 the river was named one of the New7Wonders of Nature.
