Establishment of Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary

14 April 1971

Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary is a wetland reserve in the delta of the Senegal River in northwestern Senegal, close to the border with Mauritania. Its lagoons, ponds, marshes and channels form a refuge at the edge of the Sahara, and it is a wintering ground for millions of migratory birds that cross the desert from Europe, among them ducks, waders and herons. It also hosts one of the largest breeding colonies of great white pelicans in West Africa, as well as flamingos, crocodiles and warthogs. UNESCO inscribed it as a World Heritage Site in 1981. Invasive aquatic plants and changes to the river's flooding after the construction of dams, such as the one at Diama, have posed threats to the ecosystem.
