2012 Russian presidential election

4 March 2012

The 2012 Russian presidential election was won in the first round by Vladimir Putin, who took roughly sixty-three percent of the vote and returned to the presidency after four years as prime minister under Dmitry Medvedev. The two had announced the previous autumn that they would swap positions. The Communist Party leader Gennady Zyuganov came second, and the businessman Mikhail Prokhorov third. The election followed large protests in Moscow after the parliamentary elections of December 2011, which opposition groups said had been marked by fraud, and observers reported irregularities again in the presidential vote. The presidential term had been extended to six years, and Putin went on to win further terms.
