Construction of Kuala Lumpur International Airport

27 June 1998

Kuala Lumpur International Airport is the main airport of Malaysia, built at Sepang in the state of Selangor, around fifty kilometers south of the capital. It was planned in the 1990s as part of Malaysia's drive for modernization and was designed by the Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa, who aimed for an airport set in a forest, blending buildings with greenery. It opened in 1998, just before Kuala Lumpur hosted the Commonwealth Games, replacing the older Subang airport as the main international gateway. It is the home hub of Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia, and has been expanded with a second terminal for low-cost carriers.
