Hong Kong International Airport is the main airport of Hong Kong, built on the artificial island of Chek Lap Kok, off the northern coast of Lantau Island. It replaced Kai Tak Airport in the city centre, whose location among high-rise buildings and surrounded by mountains made landings difficult and limited its growth. The island was created by flattening hills and reclaiming land from the sea as the centrepiece of a huge infrastructure plan, which included bridges, a railway and a new road network. The terminal was designed by the British architect Norman Foster. The opening day was marred by computer failures at the cargo terminal, but the airport soon became one of the busiest passenger and cargo hubs in the world.
