Creation of Symbian

5 June 1998

Symbian Ltd was formed in 1998 as a joint venture between Psion and the mobile phone makers Ericsson, Nokia and Motorola to create a common operating system for smartphones. It grew out of Psion's EPOC system, designed for small battery-powered handheld computers, and was built to run in the limited memory of early mobile devices. Symbian OS powered many Nokia and Sony Ericsson phones and, through the 2000s, was the most widely used smartphone platform in the world. It lost ground after the arrival of the iPhone and Android, Nokia took full control of it in 2008 and later turned to Windows Phone, and the platform was effectively wound down in the early 2010s.
