Creation of Mandriva Linux

23 July 1998

Mandriva Linux began as Mandrake Linux, created by the French developer Gael Duval, who combined the Red Hat distribution with the KDE desktop to make Linux easier for beginners. It was among the first distributions aimed at ordinary desktop users, with a friendly graphical installer, and it gained a large following in the early 2000s. The company behind it was renamed Mandriva after a merger with the Brazilian company Conectiva, and the distribution took the same name. It later suffered from financial trouble and internal disputes, and the company went bankrupt in 2015. The community continued the work in forks, including Mageia and OpenMandriva.
