Construction of Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport

8 January 2001

Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen International Airport is the second airport of Istanbul, located on the Asian side of the city in the district of Pendik. It opened in 2001 and was named after Sabiha Gokcen, the adopted daughter of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk and the first Turkish woman to become a combat pilot. The airport was built to relieve the pressure on the older Ataturk Airport on the European side. It is the main base of the low-cost airline Pegasus Airlines, and it grew rapidly as an alternative for travellers, particularly those travelling to or from the eastern parts of the city. A new large Istanbul Airport opened in 2018 and took over most international traffic.
