Creation of C#

2001

C# is a multi-paradigm programming language developed at Microsoft and released in 2001 as part of the .NET Framework. It was designed by a team led by Anders Hejlsberg, who had earlier created Turbo Pascal and Delphi. C# was intended as a modern, object-oriented language that was simple and type-safe, drawing on C++ and Java. It was standardized by Ecma International and the ISO in the following years, and has gained many features, such as generics, asynchronous programming and pattern matching. It is widely used for Windows applications, web services, and games developed in the Unity engine, and since the open-sourcing of .NET it runs on Linux and macOS as well.
