Creation of Visual Basic .NET

2001

Visual Basic .NET was Microsoft's reworking of the Visual Basic language to run on the .NET Framework and its Common Language Runtime. Unlike earlier versions, it was fully object-oriented and compiled to the same intermediate language as C#, which broke compatibility with classic Visual Basic 6 and forced many programmers to rewrite or substantially change existing code. It was introduced in 2001 as part of Microsoft's .NET initiative, with the first stable release arriving together with Visual Studio .NET in early 2002. The language kept a readable, English-like syntax and remained popular for business and database applications, although Microsoft later stopped adding major new features to it while C# became the main language of the platform.
