Release of Drupal

15 January 2001

Drupal is a free and open-source content management system written in the PHP language. It began as a small message board created by the Belgian student Dries Buytaert while he was at the University of Antwerp, and he released it to the public as open-source software. The name comes from the Dutch word druppel, meaning drop. Under the GNU General Public License, a large community of developers contributed modules and themes, and Drupal grew into a platform for complex sites such as those run by universities, media organisations and government agencies. It is known for its flexible content structures and its strong security record. Buytaert later founded the company Acquia to provide commercial services around it.
